I thought I’d share some of the main things I got up to during my trip to the island of Rarotonga. In this post you'll find the top things to do and what you should not miss while being on the island!
I only took the bus that goes around the island. It’s not too reliable although there is a timetable it generally runs on ‘island time’. One runs clockwise and one anticlockwise – it will pick you up from anywhere on the road just waive the driver to stop the bus.
You can rent cars and scooters on the island to be more flexible. To rent a scooter you need to go to the police station and take a scooter test to get your license.
Hiking
Even if you don’t like hiking - on Rarotonga it is a must. There are many hikes all around the island ranging from easy to very difficult.
The most popular hike is the Cross Island Trek. The Needle hike is half of the Cross Island trek. You can choose to continue on for the full Cross Island from here or walk the same way back. I did the full hike and it was epic but definitely don’t do it alone or after/ during rain!
I also walked the Raemaru Trail. It’s a tough one as well but doesn’t take as long. Once you reach the top you have to climb a bit and there are ropes to help you - I didn’t do it as I am quite scared of heights.
Muri Beach
For snorkelling the best beaches are around Muri. There is a snorkel spot called Fruits of Rarotonga in this area as well. I didn’t go snorkelling but instead enjoyed the turquoise water and white sandy beach.
Markets
MURI NIGHT MARKET
Muri night market is on certain evenings per week and starts at 5pm. Lots of stalls are selling different types of food.
PUNANGA SATURDAY MARKET
I really enjoyed this Saturday morning market. It can get super busy, but it is a good option and full of souvenirs, crafts and clothes.
