Before you can apply for your IRD number you will need to have your own New Zealand bank account. You can find more information in my Work & Travel - Preparation article and my instructions on how to set up your bank account.

Step 1:

You will need the following documents to apply for an IRD number:

Your passport

Your Tax ID of your home country

A copy of your visa

Proof of a fully functional NZ bank account

This can be a bank statement with the following details:

Your name

Your account number

Deposits and withdrawals in different amounts and a stamp and signature of your bank

Proof of your New Zealand address (usually already on the bank certificate for your bank account)

Step 2:

Here you can find the online form of the IR742 IRD-Number. You can either print it out at home or visit a Post Office where it is available and can be handed in as soon as you have filled it in.

Step 3:

In the next step you simply fill out the form with your data.

  1. leave blank

2. first name(s), surname, title

3. date of birth

4. in general, you don't enter anything here (your previous name, for example, comes in here if you got married)

5. current residential address: Your address in New Zealand
Current postal address: will not be filled in
Previous address: your address in Germany

6. New Zealand mobile phone number

7. a) your email address

7. b) best you put a check here, then you get your IRD Number instead of with the post by mail. This is much faster.

8. a) For the Working Holiday Visa "For Employment in New Zealand" has to be checked

8. b) Check "No”

9. enter your home tax number and add your home country

10. (a) New Zealand bank account number

10. b) here it depends on how you submit the certificate from the bank. Either you have one issued to you (then you check "a letter from ... is attached"), or you give the IRD form to a bank employee and have them fill out the pre-printed form.

11. in general "No" is marked with a cross

12. in general "neither" is checked

At the bottom you only have to enter your signature and the date.

Step 4:

Then you hand in the completed documents and your certificates at a post office. Here the employee wanted to see my passport and then checked all the documents for completeness, stamped them and sent them off.

Step 5:

As soon as you have completed the application form and submitted it to the post office, your registration will be checked and your IRD number will then be sent to you by email.

You can also start working without your IRD number. Just let your employer know that you have applied for it and are waiting for it to be received.
