Top Things To Do In The Coromandel Region – New Zealand

Here is a list of all the places I have visited. Coromandel is definitely one of my favourite regions in New Zealand!

Coromandel is a peninsula located east of Auckland on the north island of New Zealand.  Its coastline is perfect for a pretty amazing roadtrip!

Cathedral Cove

You have to walk quite a while to reach this small bay with its eroded rocks of epic proportions, but it is a nice place to take great photos. I advise you not to drive to the parking lot and pay for it, but to park for free on the beach in the village and walk the way up. This takes longer and is also a bit of a harder walk, as it's quite a bit uphill, but you save yourself the high parking fees.

It's also possible to book a tour and kayak there, if that's something for you!

Shakespeare Cliff & Lonely Bay

The view point at the top of Shakespeare Cliff offers great views of the Coromandel region and Lonely Bay. From there, a short walk will take you to Lonely Bay Beach - a beautiful deserted beach.

Karangahake Gorge & Owharoa Falls

Karangahake is a beautiful gorge with several different hiking trails of different lengths. I walked the Windows Walk and Rail Tunnel Loop. Both are easy walks but you should definitely take a flashlight with you or use your smartphone as one, as some tunnels have to be crossed where you won't get far without light.

The Owharoa Falls are located directly on the side of the road and can be easily accessed from there.

Coromandel Coastal Walkway

My favourite Coastal Walk in New Zealand! The starting pint is the Doc-Campground Stony Bay. From there it takes about 3 hours along the coast to the Campground Fletcher Bay. You can either walk back (you should plan 6 hours for this), or pack a tent, spend the night there and make your way back the next day.

Pinnacles Track

I actually planned to walk the Pinnacles Track as an Overnight Hike. But because I didn't want to prebook the hut far in advance due to the weather forecast, it was booked out and I did the walk as a day hike. I’ve heard the sunrise there is epic! That is why I was sad at the beginning but the hike is also worth it without the sunrise or sunset! But it is quite an exhausting walk. It goes uphill for almost 3 hours and you even have to climb the last part to reach the top. But for the view it is definitely worth it.

Waiau Falls

One of my favourite waterfalls is Waiau Falls. And I have definitely seen far too many, because you can find waterfalls all over New Zealand. Along No. 309 Road you will find this one and you can reach it after an easy short walk.
