Bamberg Day Trip: Top Things To Do

ONE OF THE BEST THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU’RE VISITING BAVARIA IS TAKING A DAY TRIP TO BAMBERG. THE CITY HAS BEAUTIFUL CORNERS AND MUCH MORE TO OFFER THAN ONE MIGHT THINK.

this ITINERARY IS ALL ABOUT VISITING THE MOST IMPORTANT AND HISTORICAL ATTRACTIONS OF MY UNIVERSITY CITY BAMBERG - ALL FOR FREE

Bamberg is an incredibly lively and young city. The river Regnitz flows through the city, with several branches and canals. You can actually ride a Venetian gondola in Bamberg. Bamberg has beautiful half-timbered houses.

In my opinion, Bamberg is always worth the day trip from Nuremberg or even Munich. Bamberg is the perfect destination to add to your Bavaria itinerary and you don't need a lot of time to see the most important places to visit in Bamberg. In Bamberg you won’t discover just one main highlight, but many little jewels.

Fun Fact: The Three Musketeers, a 2011 romantic action adventure film starring Orlando Bloom and Milla Jovovich among others, has temporarily transformed Bamberg into 17th century Paris. Fencing and fight scenes were filmed in the Alte Hofhaltung.

HOW TO GET TO bamberg FROM NUREMBERG

In order to get to Bamberg I recommend traveling by train S1 or RE14 from Nuremberg (over Fürth), or from anywhere in Germany with the Deutsche Bahn. For example traveling from Nuremberg to Bamberg takes only 60 minutes with the S1, 40 minutes with the RE14 or around 2 hours with the ICE from Munich to Bamberg by train! This will not only save you the tiresome search for a parking space, but also expensive parking fees in the city. From Bamberg main station you walk under ten minutes to the old town.

There is no need for a car. In the center you can easily reach the most important sights on foot and even if you want to go a bit further outside the train and bus service is very well developed!

There’s also the international airport "Albrecht Dürer" (NUE) in Nuremberg connecting several European cities. NUE is the best airport in Germany to get to Bamberg. From there you can also easily get to the city by train!

ONE DAY IN BAMBERG - THE BEST DAY TRIP FROM NUREMBERG

Little Venice

Little Venice is a row of fishermen's houses on the left arm of the Regnitz. The small, crooked houses nestle together picturesquely and their little gardens lead directly into the river, which makes a very popular photo motive.

By far the most romantic experience in Bamberg is a gondola ride on the Regnitz. Hard to believe, but in Bamberg there is actually a Venetian gondola where you can discover Bamberg from the water. And the best thing about it: Behind it there is no money machine, but a man who has been doing his thing for decades with an impressive amount of passion and heart. By the way, the demand for a gondola ride in Bamberg is high.

Information about the gondola ride on the Regnitz:
Gondolier Jürgen only runs his gondola on weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). With 60 Euro per gondola (max. 6 persons) you can join him for half an hour. All further information can be found on his website.

Old town hall

The landmark of Bamberg, and one of the most famous postcard motives is the Old Town Hall. What is special about this building is that it is built in the middle of the river, in the left arm of the Regnitz, and can only be reached via bridges. The gothic-baroque old town hall with its half-timbered annex immediately attracts all eyes. From the opposite bridge, the Geyerswörthsteg, you have a beautiful view of the Old Town Hall.

Cathedral Square: Bamberg Cathedral, Old Court & New Residence with Rose Garden

One place that you must see when you are in Bamberg is the Domplatz, which is the heart of the old town and located a little higher up on a hill. In the immediate vicinity of the cathedral square are several buildings worth seeing. The Old Court and the New Residence and of course the eponym: The Cathedral.

There is the Bamberg Cathedral with its characteristic four church towers. It is definitely worth taking a look inside, because this sacred building is simply gigantic, not only from the outside.

On the cathedral square is also the entrance to the Alte Hofhaltung, a historical building complex. Parts of the Alte Hofhaltung date back to the 11th century.

And last but not least, there is the New Residence with its Rose Garden. Not only can you admire thousands of roses there, but you also have a really nice view of the city from here.

WHERE TO FIND THE BEST VEGAN FOOD IN Bamberg

SpitzRein

My all time favorite place for coffee or cake is the small cafe called „SpitzRein“ in one of the most visited streets of Bamberg. They offer delicious homemade vegan and gluten free cakes with coffee or lemonade in a cozy atmosphere.

CONCLUSION

A trip to Bamberg is best combined with a visit to other cities in this area. Bamberg is especially popular to visit during a holiday in Bavaria as it is a great addition to other day trips from Munich!

If you have even more time to explore this area you have to make a day trip to the beautiful town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber or Fürth! From pretty little streets to beautiful half-timbered houses and the well-preserved town wall, there are so many beautiful spots to discover.
