Top Things To Do In Rothenburg ob der Tauber – Day Trip

Trust me - you will love Rothenburg! It literally is the town fairytales are based on:
The pretty little streets, the beautiful half-timbered houses and the location on a hill and surrounded by a well-preserved town wall. It is honestly one of THE most magical places I've ever been to, so I share all the top things to do in Rothenburg ob der Tauber on a day trip.

In my opinion, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is always worth the day trip from Nuremberg or even Munich. It is the perfect destination to add to your Bavaria itinerary and you don't need a lot of time to see the most important places to visit in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. In Rothenburg o.d. Tauber you won’t discover just one main highlight, but many little jewels. Unfortunately, this place is hardly a secret anymore due to its famous Instagram spots, but a visit is more than worth it, because it's beauty will definitely capture your heart.

HOW TO GET TO ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER

In order to get to Rothenburg ob der Tauber I recommend traveling by train S4 or RE90 from Nuremberg, or from anywhere in Germany with the Deutsche Bahn. For example traveling from Nuremberg to Rothenburg o. d. Tauber takes less than 1.5 hours with two transfers and a bit longer than 1.5 hours with from Munich to Rothenburg ob der Tauber by train! This will not only save you the tiresome search for a parking space, but also expensive parking fees in the city. From Rothenburg o.d. T. main station you walk under ten minutes to the old town.

The most comfortable option to travel to Rothenburg ob der Tauber is by car. However, in the center you can easily reach the most important sights on foot and even if you want to go a bit further outside the train and bus service is very well developed!

There’s also the international airport "Albrecht Dürer" (NUE) in Nuremberg connecting several European cities. NUE is the best airport in Germany to get to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. From there you can also easily get to the city by train!

Walk along the old city wall: The tower path

The old town is surrounded by a city wall, which is still well preserved. The best part: You will find stairs along the entire city wall to get up or down next to almost any tower. The views are really nice, and you get a great view of the city.

The "Plönlein"

The landmark of Rothenburg o. d. Tauber and one of the most famous postcard motives is the Plölein. The Plölein is probably Rothenburgs most iconic view and one of the top things to do in this city as part of your day trip. The pretty corner is really nice to look at and you might already know the famous fork in the "Untere Schmiedengasse" from instagram, as it is one of the most instagrammable places in Rothenburg o. d. Tauber. I highly suggest coming in the morning or in the early evening to avoid the crowds.
